Project Learn

Project Learn reinforces the academic enrichment and school engagement of young people during the time they spend at the Club. Through Project Learn, Club staff use all the areas and programs in the Club to create opportunities for these high-yield learning activities, which include leisure reading, writing activities, discussions with knowledgeable adults, helping others, homework help, tutoring and games (such as Scrabble), that develop young people’s cognitive skills. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between Club and school professionals as critical factors in creating the best after-school learning environment for Club members.

The WISE Guys & Gals Program is a National Science Foundation Project for Advancing Informal STEM Learning created by Hofstra University in conjunction with the University of Virginia and The CUNY Graduate Center’s Center for Advanced Study of Education (CASE).

WISE Guys & Gals (WGG) will introduce middle school age youth to innovative and engaging STEM based engineering challenges that are applicable to their lives. By the end of the project, youth will be provided with an opportunity to experience engineering design as they develop engineering thinking, new STEM competencies, embedded STEM career awareness, and an appreciation for the civic value of STEM knowledge.
Hempstead Boys & Girls Club introduced WISE Guys & Gals Curriculum to their members and created a challenge for the members to become STEMgineers! The members that completed 7 our of 10 projects during the school year would be named a STEMgineer. Each child receives a concept card that reviews the lesson and has a photo on the front. These cards enable our members to be able to look back at all the projects they have completed!
