Did you know there is a Memorial Day for all of the lost socks you’ve misplaced in the laundry? Well, May 9th is Lost Sock Memorial Day! Fulton Site celebrated it in a big way. The members were asked to bring in a lonely sock that no longer has a partner. On Lost Sock Memorial Day, the members made the socks come alive! They made them into fun, happy, sock puppets! The children were able to use googly eyes, markers, multi colored pipe cleaners, and their imagination! Fulton members had a blast! The members sat to listen to the story of “Where’s My Sock?” This book was all about losing socks and not wanting to wear mismatched socks. The kids enjoyed the book, taking all crazy guesses where the sock could have possibly gone! After the book was read, our members were asked to write a crazy, whacky, silly story about where they think all of the lost socks end up. The kids are still working on their stories and drawings. Fulton Site will be putting together a mini book of all the crazy sock stories!

The Franklin Site held its third annual career day this week. It was an exciting opportunity for the members to learn about different options for their futures. First up was Judge Tricia Ferrell. She spoke about her job as a District Court Judge in Nassau County and the kids had many questions for her. Diamond Williams asked, “Why did you want to become a judge?” Judge Ferrell told her she became a judge after being a lawyer and she was a lawyer because she liked to talk a lot and debate just like many of the members.
The next speaker was Mr. Elido from TD Bank who spoke about the importance of saving and told the kids about a summer program where TD Bank will give them money in exchange for reading books. He also brought gift bags which the kids enjoyed.
Dr. Vanessa Hickenson from Nassau County Medical Center followed him with her story of how she became a pediatrician. When she told them she sometimes has to do a twenty-four hour shift at the hospital, Donovan Leviner-Dennis yelled out, “What!?” Despite the long hours, some of the kids still said they wanted to be doctors when they grew up.
Mr. Curry, a former principal in the Hempstead School District and current photographer in Mayor Hall’s office, was next and he made the kids laugh with old stories of kids he used to work with. He also spoke of his love of taking pictures.
Last, but not least, the new volunteer at the Franklin Site, Mr. Chris, spoke about his job as a property manager. He had a few funny stories and candy so the members were happy. Thank you to all the speakers for taking the time to come visit with our kids.

May 7th 2012, Hempstead Boys & Girls Club was honored to have Miss Long Island come to talk to our members. She visited all three sites with great ideas and enthusiasm! She spoke to our members about having self-esteem. She expressed how she was bullied as a child and shared how she overcame the feelings that bullying caused her. The students were very engaged and enjoyed having her. Arieanna Latore (5th grade) said, " Ms. Long Island was wonderful. She sang for us and she told us she used to be shy so she gave me the confidence to stand up and talk about myself." We hope to have Miss Long Island back! We’d like to thank Miss Long Island for coming. She has helped encourage our members to always BE GREAT!

After hours of practice all quarter, the performing arts club put on their play Franklin Goes Broadway in front of a packed house of parents, school officials and other members. The play was a story about a young girl named Maria Franklin who rose from humble beginnings in an orphanage to get a part in a Broadway show. The role of Maria required learning multiple dances, singing and acting and Aminah Timmons did a great job. Onyesha Singletary and Arieanna Latore also did wonderful as the mentors who helped Maria get the part. Their performance of Popular was very entertaining.
However, every member of the cast was important in making the show a success. From the great delivery of Melissa Zavala as the narrator that got the audience involved to the dancing of Carrie Brown as a bad auditioner that made everyone laugh, each member made their part add something to the play. Even Ms. Singletary, a parent of one of the members, in her role as Ms. Kahoodawho helped make the orphanage scene memorable.
Additionally, there were many contributions made by people off the stage. Mr. Carlos brought his sound system to help with the music. Costumes were made with the help of Ms. Roxanne (Ms. Carol’s sister) and Mrs. Karen (Ms. Stephanie’s mom). Most importantly, the direction of Mrs. Carol, Ms. Tish, Ms. Chapri, and Ms. Amanda brought the show together and got the best performances out of the kids. Thanks to everyone for all their hard work.

On Friday April 27th, Hempstead Boys & Girls Club’s Fulton Site held a carnival for their members. The room was filled with many games such as bowling, a ring toss, can toss, and many more. Members were given tickets at each station for successfully completing the game before them, which they could turn in for wonderful prizes at the end of the night! Members were able to take photos with a clown wig and nose for fun! Ms. Val and Mr. Luis took members three at a time and taught them how to juggle. Joshua Vasquez and Ashley Reyes were naturals by the end of the night! The winners of our “Guess How Many” were Elyssa Swaby and Kimberly Cardona. The night was a huge success thanks to our members, the staff, and helpful volunteers.
