At 3:30 pm on Wednesday, January 7th 2009, the Franklin Elementary Unit of the Hempstead Boys & Girls Club was transformed into "Incredibles University." Under the direction of Disney on Ice skaters and Club staff, the children were put into small groups where they underwent intensive superhero training. The conclusion of the training session was marked by a special surprise appearance from Mr. and Mrs. Incredible! This spectacular Disney couple presented each newly trained superhero with a certificate acknowledging them as being "Officially Incredible."

The Hempstead Boys & Girls Club is proud to announce that Evera Bailey is the recipient of the first ever Dear Neighbor Scholarship given by Sacred Heart Academy of Hempstead. This is a tremendous achievement and an immense oppotunity for Evera. According the Sacred Heart Academy, The Dear Neighbor Scholarship is a four year scholarship awarded by Sacred Heart Academy annually to a young woman from the Hempstead area who displays a desire, along with the academic ability, to succeed and become a contributing member of the Sacred Heart community. Sacred Heart Academy is a Catholic, all-girls college preparatory school located in Hempstead. Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Sacred Heart provides excellence in education for young women, challenging them to become leaders of tomorrow and "women of heart." |

On Friday, January 23, 2009, the Hempstead Boys & Girls Club, along with the youth of Hempstead Village, celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. and the historical inauguration of Barack Obama. It was the perfect ending to a very exciting and inspirational week. The event, named “Words Count”, showcased the hard work and talent of children and young adults from various programs and schools in the Hempstead community. Performers used different mediums to commemorate both the inauguration of Obama and the life and dreams of Martin Luther King Jr., including art, dance, song, acting, poetry and oration. |
